that the music kinda rises and falls on the comradery of the people you're on stage with.
I am fortunate as a songwriter in that basically everybody in the group has a multifaceted background with music.
So Jared does obviously piano and keyboards, drums and sings, but he also, he can notate a lot of the music and he can write out a lot of the harmony parts, but he also can produce and Matt on bass does an enormous amount of engineering, so at a cellular level, everybody's approaching it from the perspective of, well, this is where my instrument sits, so they're kind of composing parts to know this is what's gonna fit here and nobody's walking on each other's toes.
Matt can do infinitely more on bass than he does, he just keeps it pretty much in the pocket, but then if Max dials back, Matt can play as much as he wants and same with Jared on the drums.
Everybody on stage for the most part is really holding back until it's that time and then bam and it's fun.
- Seems like the musical payoff is big.
Everybody's walking away after each tune with more than they put in and I think there's a level of poetry, there's a level of honesty that's always going on as these things get fashioned in real time.
- If I write a song, we've been working on composing music together and I feel like our next album is gonna have a lot more of group compositions, but to me, my songs always come from, I shouldn't say always, I would say 95% of my songs come from something that matters to me.
They're not just lyrics strung together.
They're a feeling, they're a sentiment.
I'll listen back to that song or I'll play it live and I am drawn back to how I felt when I wrote that song and so I usually will explain to the band where that came from because, again, like he's talking about trust and it is daunting to think, well I've got this song that matters to me, these lyrics, these feelings, these emotions, I now need to bring it to what amounts to, in common vernacular, a committee of people who are now gonna each add their part hopefully without taking away.
I would rather Jared and Stephany and Matt understand where the sentiment for the song came from.
If they sing a harmony part that they feel.
If we double up on some notes, I don't care because the feeling is there and music is so much more to me than math.
It more is feeling.
At the fundamental level, if I couldn't get feeling outta music, I wouldn't do it.

As it continues to move into a collaborative writing scenario.
I wanted to be an engineer, I never got around to it.
Now I'm too old to go back to school and do it, so I fill my time outside of my job that makes money with things that are creative oriented, so for me, the music aspect plays into that same feeling, the same desire to create, so if this was a situation where, Jared, I need you to play this beat, Jared, I need you to build here, Jared, I need you to get quiet here, Jared, I need you to sing this and sing that, I couldn't see myself continuing forward.
This group is not like that.
This is a how do you feel you should do in this situation?
What do you wanna play here?
Let's just jam in the studio.
We'll come in here and I need to be kind of changing and growing with what I'm doing.
- But then the other thing that really begs some sort of thought or if you wanna try to speak to it is where you come up with what you come up with.
Where do those lines come from that you're playing because they're pretty off the wall.
I mean, you could say, okay, there's a little Celtic, there's a little jazz, there's a little sort of rock violin type stuff.
It's a very distinctive voice.
- I guess it all comes just from a creative perspective.
My own personal maybe like what does this song need, what does it not have, what maybe could I add to it and it's not over the top and it's like my own kind of taste or feel from where maybe the song could be going or where it's coming from.
Music is about really is just being right your most genuine, authentic self and for me too, especially, every time I'm playing, I make sure that I can honestly ask myself did you actually play your very best?
Did you really give it all?
I just strive to do that.
- You don't often do linear structures.
- You're often doing really unusual intervals.
It's really cool because it's very unique.
It's almost more like a fiddle player playing guitar licks.
You know what I mean?
- Yes, I was laughing when Max said I gotta find something that's not over the top because there will be times when I'll be on stage and I'll be like, Max, that is the best fiddle solo you have ever played on this song because I don't think that Max decides what he's gonna play until he's playing it.
- Do you hear the melody in your head before you play it?
- I come at it with an idea in mind, but it's never premeditated.
- So just be like going, oh, I think this is gonna be good, it's good.
- It's all just thought of on the spot.
- Everything he does is improvised.
If I'd be like, Max, that was the one, he'll forget what it was and I'll have to record it at practice and be like.
- He'll be like great, what did I do?
- Do that again, Max, and he'll be like, I don't remember what it was.
I will go buy a new guitar pedal for my pedalboard that I'll be excited to use and then I will play it, discover that Max can do infinitely more with my guitar pedal on his fiddle than I can with my guitar, so I just un velcro it and give it to Max.

Like I can sit down with an acoustic guitar and I can play and I can do that and I can push out my own emotions down here all by myself sometimes, but in my head, I hear all these things that I want.
I'll write a song and I'll have 42 layers on it before I'm even done putting my guitar down.
Then I am fortunate that I've got an entire group of people that will come in and they will respect my emotions and my sensibilities with that, but they'll also add their fingerprints to that and turn it into something that's like, oh yes, that's what I wanted and that is, to me, that's where the song becomes complete.
It's not when I'm done writing the lyrics or when I settle on what chords I'm doing or the melody line, it's when I hear it with all the arrangement.
That's where I'm like, yes, that's it, close the book, that's what I needed.
- What a remarkable situation though.
If you've created an environment where you're inviting creativity from everybody and then you trust that, I mean, this is really because looking around the studio that you designed, you just can't help yourself.
You're just gonna be creative.
- We're the kind of band where I would rather sit down and play in this room with these guys and write a new song than I would go play for a bunch of people that aren't paying attention.
Our favorite venues that we've ever hit up are the ones where people are, they hear what we're saying, but at my core, I write songs because if I didn't write these emotions out, I would explode.
So to me, that's what I am doing.
That's where those songs come from.
- One of the reasons why I fell in love with him is because of how much he feels and how sensitive he can be as a person because he feels those emotions and I think that we all in this group kind of are sensitive to that.
I think that's what makes us really good musicians is feeling that emotion and being able to express it, even if it's in our own way, through our own instrument or through our own self-expression and I think because this group has so much of that and it's like a continuation, like I can see another emotional event happening tomorrow and something beautiful being brought to the table and everyone finding a way to help it evolve and make it beautiful and having that touch someone in a specific way 'cause you never know who it's gonna touch, but I think that is the purpose.
There's a part of you that's doing it for yourself and then there's another part of you that really wants to know that it can help someone in some way.
It can touch them in some way and make the world just a little more beautiful.
